MPI helps trick-or-treaters stay safe this Halloween

As families prepare for a night of fun this Halloween, Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is reminding all road users to do their part to keep children safe.

Through its 2026 Halloween Pedestrian Safety Promotion, MPI is providing over 83,000 wearable flashing safety lights to Kindergarten through Grade 6 students at more than 360 schools across Manitoba. The round reflective safety flasher lights can be easily attached to costumes to help children be more visible to motorists while trick-or-treating and can be used throughout the year.

“While Halloween is an exciting night for children, it also brings increased risks as more pedestrians are out on our roads after dark,” said Maria Campos, Vice President & Chief Customer and Product Officer for MPI. “By helping children be more visible and encouraging families to practise safe behaviours, we can all play a part in making sure Halloween remains a fun and safe experience for everyone.”

As part of the program, the Crown corporation has also provided schools with a Halloween road safety video and classroom lesson plans to help students recognize unsafe pedestrian behaviours and learn how to stay safe near roadways. Parents and guardians are also receiving important road safety reminders to reinforce these lessons at home.

Pedestrian collisions highlight the need for extra caution

According to MPI data, more than half (55 per cent) of Manitoba’s fatal pedestrian collisions over the past five years happened between August and November, highlighting the need for everyone to do their part to keep trick-or-treaters safe.

MPI encourages all road users to follow these important safety tips:

For trick-or-treaters and their families:

  • Look in all directions for traffic before crossing the street
  • Never cross between parked cars
  • Use corners and crosswalks whenever possible
  • Always walk – never run – across the street
  • Wait for vehicles to come to a complete stop and make eye contact with drivers before crossing at traffic lights and stop signs
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing and use wearable safety lights to help motorists see you
  • Be cautious of masks that may obstruct vision and dark costumes that may be difficult for drivers to see
  • Consider walking with children or having them travel in groups
  • Remember that vehicles cannot stop quickly in wet or icy conditions

For motorists:

  • Slow down, especially in residential neighbourhoods where children may be trick-or-treating
  • Stay alert and watch for children who may suddenly enter the roadway or emerge from between parked vehicles
  • Don’t assume children can see your vehicle or will wait for you to pass
  • Be prepared to stop at a moment’s notice
  • Stop and yield the right-of-way to pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks
  • Never pass a vehicle that has slowed down or stopped for pedestrians at a crosswalk

MPI wishes all Manitobans a happy and safe Halloween!

“It happened to me”: Speakers bring road-safety message to Manitoba students

This week, Manitoba Public Insurance’s (MPI’s) Friends for Life speaker series kicks off its 15th year across communities in Manitoba. Speakers whose lives have been forever changed by dangerous driving decisions will share their personal experiences with students, encouraging them to make responsible choices and help keep our roads safe.

The Friends for Life speaker series is designed for students in Grades 10–12 and will travel over the next two weeks to schools in Steinbach, Brandon, Elie, St. Pierre, Pilot Mound, Manitou, Winnipegosis, Thompson, Nelson House, Cranberry Portage, Flin Flon, The Pas, Swan River and Winnipeg.

“As we recognize the 15th anniversary of Friends for Life, we’re reminded of the incredible impact personal stories can have in encouraging young Manitobans to make safe choices behind the wheel,” said Maria Campos, Vice President & Chief Customer and Product Officer at MPI. “We are deeply grateful to our speakers for having the courage to share experiences shaped by incredibly difficult moments in their lives. Their stories are a powerful reminder that the decisions we make behind the wheel can have lasting, and sometimes irreversible, consequences. By reaching young people at the very beginning of their driving journeys, we hope these experiences will stay with them and reinforce the responsibility each of us has to help keep Manitoba’s roads safe.”

This year’s speakers include Jon Tiessen and his sister, Rosalie Finch, whose lives were changed when Jon was seriously injured by an impaired driver; Sandra LaRose, who lost her daughter Kailynn in a collision involving distracted driving; and Cody Demerais, who shares his journey of recovery and personal responsibility after causing a serious impaired driving collision.

MPI statistics show that young Manitobans are at higher risk for collision, injuries, and fatalities.

  • There were 69 fatalities on Manitoba roadways in 2025, and 37 in the first 6 months of 2026.
  • There were 164 collisions in Manitoba involving impairment in 2025.
  • There were 3,071 collisions in Manitoba where speed was a factor in 2025.
  • 29 people were killed in distracted driving crashes in Manitoba in 2025.
  • Young Manitobans (aged 24 and younger) are more than twice as likely to be convicted of impairment-related offences compared with other age groups.
  • In 2025, 75 Manitobans under the age of 18 were injured in speed-related collisions in Manitoba.

MPI and City of Winnipeg curb rideshare insurance fraud, protect rates for Manitobans

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) and the City of Winnipeg have partnered to crack down on insurance fraud by ensuring rideshare drivers are operating with the required coverage and paying their fair share of premiums and claims costs.

Individuals operating in Winnipeg must provide proof to rideshare companies that their vehicle is insured with MPI’s Vehicle-for-Hire (VFH) insurance, which is required by law.

An MPI review conducted in December 2025 examined a random sample of 408 rideshare vehicles in Winnipeg and found that 108 vehicles, or 26 per cent, were operating without the required VFH coverage. Drivers had instead changed their coverage to personal All-Purpose or Pleasure Use policies, after providing the original VFH proof of insurance.

In response, MPI and the City of Winnipeg, which oversees regulatory compliance for drivers and rideshare companies in Winnipeg, have strengthened their efforts through monthly data analysis, enhanced monitoring, and targeted enforcement activities, including removing identified vehicles from operating until they provide proof of the correct coverage. The rideshare industry also played an important role in supporting compliance efforts by providing data and working collaboratively with the City and MPI.

“MPI’s VFH coverage is designed to account for the risk taken on by rideshare drivers, who are on the road more. When a driver changes their coverage from rideshare insurance to personal vehicle coverage and continues operating as a rideshare driver, that is fraud, plain and simple. It creates an unfair advantage for those who choose not to follow the rules and shifts costs onto honest drivers and ratepayers,” said Satvir Jatana, MPI’s President & CEO.

“As the province’s public auto insurer, we have a responsibility to ensure our system remains fair for all ratepayers. This partnership with the City of Winnipeg is part of MPI’s ongoing commitment to protecting customers and keeping rates affordable and stable for everyone.”

The focused efforts have delivered results – the number of underinsured or vehicles operating on rideshare platforms declined nearly 80 per cent since February 2026.
Between February and August 2026 approximately 3,000 rideshare vehicles were identified and prevented from operating in Winnipeg due to not carrying VFH insurance coverage.

MPI is also taking steps to address the financial impacts of past non-compliance. Initial reviews suggest approximately 1,200 policies carried insufficient coverage between December 2025 and February 2026, totalling an estimated $260,000 in underpaid premiums. The Crown corporation will be pursuing recovery of these funds in accordance with legislation. MPI is also identifying claims where drivers misrepresented how they were using their vehicle at the time of a collision and will pursue recovery of claims costs where appropriate. A preliminary assessment has identified 36 claims totaling approximately $189,000 involving rideshare activity without appropriate insurance coverage. Additional data remains under review.

The City of Winnipeg says the partnership demonstrates the importance of collaboration in maintaining a safe and accountable industry.

“This work demonstrates the value of coordinated enforcement. The City’s Vehicle for Hire division brings its regulatory and enforcement authority, while MPI provides critical insurance verification and expertise. By working together, the two organizations are able to identify non-compliance more effectively, take timely enforcement action, and encourage rideshare providers to maintain the appropriate insurance coverage,” said Grant Heather, Manager of Vehicles for Hire, City of Winnipeg.

MPI and the City of Winnipeg will continue strengthening oversight to ensure rideshare operators maintain required coverage. Future measures being considered include enhanced insurance verification processes, customer declarations regarding vehicle use, expanded data sharing between MPI, the City and rideshare platforms and improved claims screening processes.

Registration for winter term of MPI’s Driver Z program begins in October

The road to a driver’s licence starts this fall for Manitoba students looking to get behind the wheel – registration for the winter term of MPI’s popular high school driver education program, Driver Z, begins later this month.

With course start dates in December, January and February, winter course offerings will be available to view in MPI’s Driver Z Course Finder on Friday, October 9, giving parents, guardians and students time to review the options available in their area.

Students interested in registering for a winter course must sign up as a new MPI customer and purchase the Driver Education service at an MPI Service Centre or Autopac broker by end of day on Saturday, October 10 to be eligible to receive an invitation for a registration window.

“Driver Z gives young Manitobans the knowledge, skills and experience they need as they begin learning to drive,” said Dana Frazer, Vice President and Chief Operations Officer at MPI. “This winter, we’re offering approximately 3,000 seats across the province to help prepare the newest drivers on our roads to navigate them safely – especially during the challenging conditions that the season brings.”

Registration will take place in three multi-day windows beginning October 14, followed by general registration on November 4. Eligible customers will receive an email advising them of their assigned registration window and they can choose a date and time that works for them to register for a course at a broker, an MPI Service Centre or by calling MPI’s Contact Centre.

More information about Driver Z, including eligibility requirements, current course availability and the registration process, is available on MPI’s website.

MPI expands hail estimating services in Winnipeg

Following an extraordinary response to the severe weather events that impacted customers across Manitoba this summer, Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is expanding hail estimating services to all Winnipeg Service Centres to provide customers with more options for appointments and greater flexibility to have their vehicles assessed closer to where they live or work.
As of September 14, over 40,000 storm-related claims have been opened with the Crown corporation since June 9. The storm in Winnipeg on June 9 alone drove a record-setting volume of these claims, making it the largest single claim event in MPI’s history.

Since early June, MPI has responded by implementing special response measures designed to serve customers quickly and where they needed support most. This included MPI opening dedicated Hail Response Centres in Winnipeg, introducing alternative claims processes, with the support of its repair industry partners, to help customers begin moving forward with repairs as soon as possible as well as deploying mobile estimating services to communities in southwestern Manitoba.

As a result of these efforts, nearly 80 per cent of customers have scheduled an appointment with MPI or a repair shop to have the damage to their vehicle assessed, and estimates have been completed for 65 per cent of all storm-related claims opened this summer.

With this significant progress, MPI can now offer hail estimating appointments at all Winnipeg Service Centres, giving customers more convenient and accessible options to have their vehicles assessed.

Updates to Winnipeg and area claims response

Beginning on Oct. 1, MPI will reintroduce hail estimating appointments at all of its Winnipeg Service Centres. These appointments are available for booking, starting today.
Customers who have already opened a claim but have not yet booked an estimate at an
MPI location are encouraged to contact MPI’s Contact Centre at 204-985-7000 or toll
free at 1-800-665-2410 to schedule an appointment at a Service Centre near them.

The Hail Response Centre at MPI’s Gateway Service Centre will continue operating until
Oct. 30, and following this date, estimating appointments from this location will be
distributed to all Winnipeg Service Centres.

Continued support in southwestern Manitoba
Estimating appointments are continuing in Boissevain and Killarney to assist in processing
claims related to the July 5 storm in the area. MPI expects to remain in the region
throughout the fall to ensure customers can continue accessing the support they need
close to home.

Customers in the area who have opened claims with MPI will be contacted directly to
schedule an appointment, as they are available.

Any customers who have not yet reported damage related to any severe weather event
this summer are encouraged to open a claim online or by contacting MPI’s Contact
Centre.

MPI understands the impact severe weather has had on customers across the province
and appreciates the patience shown throughout the summer. The Corporation remains
focused on helping customers complete the claims process and return their vehicles to
pre-damage conditions as quickly as possible.

MPI helping Manitobans save money on dedicated winter tires

Drivers across the province can stay safe this winter by applying to Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI)’s Winter Tire Program.

Manitoba winters come with very cold temperatures and harsh road conditions, including packed snow, blowing snow, slush and ice. Winter tires are designed with rubber compounds that remain flexible in frigid temperatures, allowing the tread to conform to the road rather than becoming hard and losing grip.

“Wintertime in Manitoba means snowy and slippery roads, and as a result we consistently see the highest number of collisions between November and March,” said Maria Campos, MPI’s Vice President and Chief Customer and Product Officer. “Winter tires reduce collisions by 6.3 per cent, and vehicles equipped with winter tires may experience less severe damage in crashes.”

Winter tires should be installed when temperatures stay below +7°C. It’s a common misconception that all-season tires are sufficient for handling winter roads; tests show a full set of winter tires has better traction below -30°C than all-season tires and stop much faster on ice.

“MPI’s Winter Tire Program was created to keep Manitobans safe on the roads in winter,” said Campos. “For the past 12 years, MPI has been providing loans for tires that are engineered to handle these conditions through low-interest financing options that make them a more affordable investment.”

The Winter Tire Program, which provides financing of up to $2,000 for the purchase of eligible winter tires and related equipment, has provided over 287,000 loans to Manitobans worth over $387 million since it began in 2014.

To ensure program funding supports tires that deliver the greatest safety benefits in winter driving conditions, effective October 1, 2026, only manufacturer designated winter tires that display the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol will be eligible under the program.

Customers considering a tire purchase are encouraged to speak with any of the over 670 participating retailers across Manitoba to ensure the tires they select meet program eligibility requirements. Financing terms are between one and four years. The retailer will confirm eligibility and begin the loan authorization process. Manitobans can check their eligibility and learn more about the program at mpi.mb.ca/winter-tire-program.

Manitoba Public Insurance donates $1.2 million in collision repair equipment to RRC Polytech

As part of its ongoing commitment to advancing a strong, sustainable auto repair industry,
Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is proud to announce a donation of approximately $1.2 million
worth of specialized collision repair tools and technology to RRC Polytech’s Collision Repair and
Refinishing Program.

The contribution includes over 200 individual pieces, including major frame repair systems,
welders, tire service and plastic repair equipment, and specialized collision repair tooling, that
were previously part of MPI’s physical damage automotive research and training operations. It will
now be used to help address the critical shortage of skilled collision repair technicians in Manitoba
by strengthening advanced level technical training at RRC Polytech.

“This is an excellent example of how our partnership continues to support students and
strengthen Manitoba’s skilled trades workforce,” said the Honourable Matt Wiebe, Minister
Responsible for MPI. “By ensuring future technicians have access to specialized, industry
standard equipment, MPI and RRC Polytech are providing opportunities for students to hone their
skills today, and ensure the sector has skilled professionals moving forward.”

The donation builds on MPI’s long-standing dedication to supporting Manitoba’s collision repair
industry.

“A key part of MPI’s mission is to help create safer roads for everyone, and we believe that
strengthening a healthy, sustainable repair sector is a significant part of that commitment,” said
Carmen Nedohin, MPI Board Chair. “Through ongoing work with our repair association partners
on education opportunities, scholarships as well as this contribution to RRC Polytech, MPI is
proud to be helping prepare the next generation of professionals for the increasingly complex
vehicles and technologies they will encounter in the workplace.”

As Manitoba’s only post-secondary institution offering Levels 2 through 4 of apprenticeship
training in collision repair, RRC Polytech is uniquely positioned to use this advanced equipment to
help prepare tomorrow’s technicians.

“At RRC Polytech, we are committed to providing students with the tools they need to thrive in a
rapidly evolving workforce,” said Lloyd Schreyer, RRC Polytech Board Chair. “The success of our
students is strengthened by partners like MPI, who recognize the impact of our training and
support it with innovative solutions that enrich the learning experience.”

Some of the donated equipment includes a tire balancing and tire changing machine, which will
help students learn industry-standard wheel and tire service procedures; a nitrogen welding
system for plastic repair, which teaches repair-first techniques that allow damaged plastic
components to be safely restored; and a fume extraction system; which removes welding fumes
and airborne contaminants from the work area. The equipment is set to benefit more than 400
students enrolled in transportation trades programs each year.

“As a student at RRC Polytech, I’ve been fortunate to train on the same state-of-the-art
equipment used in industry,” said Cassandra Foy, Skills Canada gold medalist and RRC Polytech
student. “Thanks to MPI’s support, my classmates, future students, and I will have even more
opportunities to develop our skills and prepare for successful careers. Thank you to MPI for their
incredible support!”

The equipment, now located at RRC Polytech’s Notre Dame Campus, will be incorporated into the
Collision Repair and Refinishing Program’s curriculum for courses beginning this fall.

MPI updates severe weather response to continue serving customers

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is continuing to respond to the over 34,000 claims opened with the Corporation since early June by focusing on providing services where customers have been the most impacted by severe weather across the province.

Over the past month, MPI has managed the largest claims event in its history by opening dedicated Hail Response Centres at its Gateway and Main Street Service Centres in Winnipeg. Following severe weather in the Westman region in early July, MPI deployed additional mobile estimating services, including its dedicated hail trailer, to support customers in Boissevain and Killarney.

As a result of these efforts, thousands of customers are moving forward with their claims to get their vehicles repaired following the storms.

MPI continues to serve customers following the storms, including in the most impacted areas of northeast Winnipeg and the Westman region of the province. In order to focus resources where they are most needed, MPI is updating its response efforts in the City of Winnipeg and has begun to wind down its Hail Response Centre at the Main Street Service Centre. The last day for appointments will be July 31 and all appointments booked until this date will continue as scheduled at this location. After Aug. 1, MPI’s Main Street Service Centre will return to offering regular estimating appointments. Initial hail assessments will continue to be available in Winnipeg at the Gateway Service Centre.

Impacted customers who have not yet opened a claim can do so online or by calling MPI’s Contact Centre at 204-985-7000 or toll free at 1-800-665-2410. Eligible customers who have opened a claim will receive an email from MPI outlining their options for next steps.

Given the high volume of claims MPI continues to receive, customers may experience delays in processing their claim. We know this can cause frustration and we are asking for patience during this time.

We understand the impact this storm continues to have on our customers and the devastation that comes from experiencing damage to or loss of property. We want to assure our customers that we are working around the clock to process claims for those who are needing our support.

MPI Files General Rate Application for 2027/28 Insurance Year

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) filed its General Rate Application (GRA) with the Public Utilities Board (PUB) today.

MPI is requesting approval of a 2.38 per cent increase to overall rates for the 2027/28 insurance year. This rate request is based on three factors: forecasted claims cost, the Corporation’s operating costs, and investment income.

Recent extreme weather events and the resulting increase in claims do not have an impact on the rate request for 2027/28. Insurance companies also have their own insurance – called reinsurance – which covers MPI for costs above a certain threshold. An isolated event like the June 9 storm would only impact the rate if those reserves fell below predetermined thresholds and MPI did not anticipate it could build them back up within a reasonable time.

-30-

MPI urges customers to continue reporting storm-related claims

MPI has received approximately 24,000 claims since the severe weather in southern Manitoba on June 9, matching the highest number of claims the public insurer has ever received related to a single weather event.

The previous record was set following a hailstorm in 1996.

MPI is reminding customers to open their claims as soon as possible to help us fully understand the total number of claims and the overall impact of this event.

Response process

To serve more customers and assess damage to vehicles faster, the Corporation has put a response process in place to manage this exceptional volume of claims.

MPI opened a dedicated Hail Response Centre at its Gateway Service Centre on June 17 to offer initial damage assessments for customers in Winnipeg and surrounding communities. The appointment-only centre is open daily, and has completed over 1,200 assessments to date. Approximately 300 appointments are available each day for eligible customers to book online once they have opened their claim and received further information from MPI.

In response to more than 200 claims opened in the Interlake region, the Corporation is also completing initial damage assessments at its Arborg Service Centre over the next two weeks. MPI will make appointments available daily for this period of time to meet demand and will be reaching out to customers directly in the community to book assessments at the centre.

MPI continues to assess the volume of claims coming in and will consider making initial assessments available at other locations as needed.

Customers who opened a claim online have received an email from MPI that contains their claim number and detailed options for next steps, based on their location:

  • Customers unsure about the extent of the damage to their vehicle, unsure if their vehicle is repairable, or owning a vehicle that is model year 2016 or earlier should choose this option.
  • A short appointment will assess the vehicle and determine if it’s likely repairable or a write-off (meaning the damage to the vehicle is significant enough that repairing it isn’t the best option). If the vehicle is repairable, a full damage estimate will be the next step.

Option 2: Complete estimate at a Direct Repair shop or Authorized Paintless Dent Repair Facility

  • Customers can proceed to an MPI-accredited repair shop to obtain a full damage estimate for eligible claims.
  • After the estimate is complete, customers can choose any accredited or authorized shop to complete the repairs or stay at the original shop to have the work completed.

Customers in Steinbach, Selkirk, Beausejour and Portage la Prairie:

MPI is reminding customers that claims should be reported depending on the type of damage that has occurred:

Glass Repairs

Customers with glass damage can contact an accredited autobody or glass repair shop to open a claim and arrange for a temporary repair. They can do this whether or not they have already begun the claims process with MPI over the phone or online. Customers will be required to pay their deductible at the time the temporary repair is done.

After the temporary repair is complete, customers will be contacted to book an estimating appointment at an MPI location to determine if the vehicle can be permanently repaired.

Damaged, and not Drivable

Customers whose vehicles cannot be driven due to storm damage should call MPI’s Contact Centre directly at 204-985-7000 or toll-free at 1-800-665-2410 to report their claim. We are prioritizing the most severe claims through our Contact Centre.

Damaged, but Drivable

Customers with damaged vehicles that can still be safely driven are encouraged to open a claim with MPI online at openclaim.mpi.mb.ca.

Registration for fall term of MPI’s Driver Z program begins in July

Although summer is still in full swing in Manitoba, students planning to get behind the wheel this
fall can start preparing now – registration for the fall term of MPI’s popular high school driver
education program, Driver Z, begins in July.

With start dates in September, October, and November, available courses for the fall session will
be posted on the Driver Z Course Finder on Friday, July 3 to allow parents, guardians and students
to plan ahead and determine which course offering works best for them.

Students interested in registering must sign up as a new MPI customer and purchase the Driver
Education service at a MPI Service Centre or Autopac broker by end of day on Saturday, July 4 to
be eligible to receive an invitation for a registration window.

“We know that fall is one of our most popular terms for Driver Z and we’re proud to be offering
over 4,700 seats for the course throughout the province to ensure as many teens as possible can
take advantage of this affordable training opportunity,” Dana Frazer, Vice President and Chief
Operations Officer at MPI.

Driver Z gives students the knowledge and skills they need to drive safely and prevent collisions,
keeping the road safe for all users. Students get this high-value training for only $50 while MPI
covers the rest of the cost, which is well over $600.

Earlier this year, MPI improved its registration process for the program and eliminated the rush to
register on a single day. Now, eligible customers are invited to a multi-day registration window and
they can choose a date and time that works for them to register for a course at a broker, an MPI
Service Centre or by calling MPI’s Contact Centre.

More information about the Driver Z registration process is available on MPI’s website.

MPI puts temporary response plan in place to manage surge of storm-related claims

MPI has received approximately 20,000 claims since last week’s severe weather and remains on pace to exceed the highest number of claims received related to a single weather event.

The Corporation has put a temporary response process in place to address this unprecedented volume of claims to serve more customers, faster.

MPI responding to record setting number of claims

MPI has received approximately 20,000 claims since Tuesday’s severe weather, putting this on pace to be the highest number of claims ever received following a single event.

MPI expects claims will continue to be reported in the weeks and months ahead, increasing the overall number of claims filed, which will likely exceed the previous limit of 24,000 in 1996.

Processing this unprecedented number of claims is unfeasible using current processes.

MPI is reminding customers to please open their claims as soon as possible to help us fully understand the total number of claims and the overall impact of this event. Customers are encouraged to use the online claim form to report drivable damage to their vehicle.

Because of the magnitude of this event, MPI is putting in place a new phased approach that will allow us to serve more customers, faster. We are finalizing a plan that will provide early damage assessments and get customers on the way to having their vehicles repaired.

We will be communicating that plan to customers in the coming days.

We understand the impact this storm is having on our customers and the devastation that comes from experiencing damage to or loss of property. We want to assure our customers that we are working around the clock to put procedures in place that will help us respond as quickly as possible to those who are needing our support.

Claims should be reported depending on the type of damage that has occurred:

MPI encourages customers with storm damaged vehicles to open claims

Following last night’s storms in Winnipeg, over 8,000 claims have been reported to MPI so far, which include hail, flood and wind damage. However, these are still preliminary numbers as customers continue to report claims and we expect the number to increase over the coming weeks.

Based on current numbers, MPI is expecting yesterday’s events to exceed the impact seen following the hail storms in 2023. This week has brought major weather events to our province, and our hearts go out to our customers who are experiencing damage and disruption to their property and lives. We have updated our processes to ensure we are fully responsive to our customers’ needs at this time.

MPI is asking customers to open their claims in different ways, depending on the type of damage that has occurred.

MPI is monitoring the severity and volume of reported claims and planning next steps to ensure vehicles are estimated as soon as possible, including opening a centralized location for customer appointments. We anticipate more details will be available later this week.

Given the high volume of claims MPI is receiving, customers may experience delays in being contacted by MPI to collect more details about their claim or to book an estimating appointment. We appreciate their patience during this time.

Manitoba Public Insurance launches Truth and Reconciliation Statement of Commitment and Indigenous Action Plan

Following engagement with Indigenous communities, employees, partners, and customers, Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is proud to launch its Statement of Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and first Indigenous Action Plan, reinforcing the advancement of Truth and Reconciliation as a key priority for the Corporation.

“This work represents a significant milestone for our organization, but more importantly, it reflects the voices and experiences shared with us through engagement with Indigenous communities across Manitoba,” said Satvir Jatana, MPI’s President & CEO. “Through our Statement of Commitment and Indigenous Action Plan, we are committed to building respectful partnerships, creating culturally safer spaces, and ensuring Indigenous voices continue to guide this work.”

MPI’s Statement of Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation:

“Manitoba Public Insurance commits to continue building and strengthening partnerships with Indigenous Peoples in Manitoba, fostering an inclusive organization that promotes economic reconciliation, raising awareness, and increasing representation among employees, while ensuring culturally safer spaces and barrier-free access to the products and services offered.”

To bring this commitment to life in realistic and intentional ways, MPI’s Indigenous Action Plan shares how the Corporation will continue strengthening relationships with Indigenous Peoples in Manitoba through meaningful engagement, and measurable action. The plan is organized around three pillars: Internal Structure, Community Impact and Cultural Empowerment.

Both the statement and plan were informed through engagement and dialogue with Indigenous people and communities and reflect the priorities identified through those conversations.
Expected actions in the first year of plan include expanding road safety and community engagement initiatives, reviewing Indigenous employment and representation within the Corporation, and improving licensing and identification services to support remote communities.

“While this plan establishes a foundation for action, we also view it as a living document that must continue to evolve through ongoing collaboration and guidance from Indigenous Peoples and communities in the years to come,” said Jatana.

The full Indigenous Action Plan is available on MPI’s website.
