There are three steps that you need to complete before you can take MPI’s Driver Z program:
- Steps 1 & 2:
- Get set up as an MPI customer
- Purchase the Driver Z program
- Step 3: Register for a Driver Z course
Steps 1 & 2 are usually completed together in one visit to your broker or an MPI Service Centre. They must be done before you are able to complete Step 3 – Register for a Driver Z course.
Steps 1 & 2 – Set up and purchase service
- Get set up as an MPI customer. If you’re under 18 years old, your parent/guardian must be with you at the broker or MPI Service Centre to become an MPI customer, or they can sign a Driver Ed Parental Consent Form and you can go on your own.
- Purchase the Driver Z program service ($50).
Customer set-up and required documents
To get set up as a customer, you will need to bring identification. Use our Proving My identity tool to find the documents you need, or bring one of the combinations below:
| Option | Required Documents |
|---|---|
| Option 1 | A Vital Statistics issued birth certificate + one document* showing where you live + a signed Declaration of Guarantor form. |
| Option 2 | Canadian passport + two documents* showing where you live. |
| Option 3 | Certificate of Indian Status + birth certificate + two documents* showing where you live. |
| Option 4 | Secure Certificate of Indian Status + two documents* showing where you live. |
| Option 5 | Foreign passport (with acceptable evidence showing entitlement to be in Canada) + two documents* showing where you live. |
| Option 6 | Canadian passport + one document* showing where you live + a signed Declaration of Guarantor of Proof of Identity form, which is available on the MPI website. |
* a bank statement, income tax statement or confirmation letter from your employer dated within 90 days. For a complete list of acceptable documents, visit establishing your identity.
Having trouble finding two address documents?
A Guarantor Declaration can help. A Guarantor is someone who can verify your identity. To act as a Guarantor, a person must be a Canadian citizen residing in Canada, and meet each of the criteria listed on the Declaration of Guarantor form.
Step 3 – Register for a Driver Z course
If you’ve completed the first two mandatory steps in the registration process – signed up as a new customer with MPI and purchased the Driver Z program service – the third and final step is to register for the course.
Driver Z course registration happens in phases. During each Driver Z session (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall), there are three assigned registration windows in addition to a general registration period.
Registration windows
If you have completed Steps 1 & 2 before the deadline date for the next Driver Z session, you will be eligible to be invited to register during a specific period of time, called your “registration window”.
We’ll let you know when it’s your turn to sign up for a Driver Z course by sending you an email that tells you when your registration window opens. Emails will be sent on the Monday before windows open and we’ll use the email address that you provided when you completed your set up as an MPI customer.
Customers who are eligible to register will be invited to one window. If you miss that window, you may have a second opportunity to sign up during the general registration period, based on course availability.
General registration
Following the registration windows, we will offer general registration, based on remaining course availability.
During this period, any eligible customer may register for available Driver Z courses in their area. If you wish to register for Driver Z but have not completed the first two mandatory steps, you can do so by visiting your broker or an MPI Service Centre during this period.

How to register
Whether you have a registration window or are participating in general registration, first go to our Driver Z Course Finder tool to review available courses in your area.
To register for a course, you can sign up in one of four ways:
- Visit a broker
- Visit a MPI Service Centre
- Call MPI’s Contact Centre at 204-985-7000 or toll-free 1-800-665-2410
- Call Driver Education at 204-985-7199 or toll-free 1-800-261-9928
A broker or MPI representative will review available course options with you and guide you through the registration process.
Frequently asked questions
How does MPI decide what registration window I’m in?
Eligible customers will be invited to registration windows based on birthdate (oldest to youngest) and course availability.
I didn’t get an email with a registration window. What do I do?
There are multiple reasons you may not receive an email, including the following:
- If you have not completed the mandatory Steps 1 & 2 of the registration process by the deadline for the current session, you will not receive a registration window. You can participate in general registration, depending on availability.
- You may not be old enough to register for any of the courses available (Reminder: you need to be 15 ½ years old on the date of the Driver Z Knowledge Test, usually five weeks after the start date of the course)
- Be sure to check your Junk or Spam email folder on or after the latest dates for the current session. If you still can’t locate an email from us, call our Contact Centre (204-985-7000 or toll-free 1-800-665-2410) or visit your broker or an MPI Service Centre to confirm the email address associated with your MPI customer account is accurate.
- You may be in an upcoming registration window – check the latest dates for the current session.
- There may not be any course availability in your community or surrounding communities at this time.
Can I change my registration window?
No, unfortunately you cannot change your registration window.
What if my email address was incorrect and the email bounces back?
If you are eligible for a registration window and your notification email is undeliverable or bounces back to us, an MPI representative will call you at the phone number listed on your MPI customer account with more information.
What if I miss my registration window?
If you miss your registration window, you may have an opportunity to sign up during the general registration period, based on remaining course availability. You’ll receive an email invitation when general registration opens. Be sure to check our Driver Z Course Finder tool to see what options are available to you.
Can someone else register me if I am not available during my registration window?
Yes, you may give someone else written authority to register on your behalf during your window. Speak to your broker or call our Contact Centre at 204-985-7000 or toll-free 1-800-665-2410 to learn more about this option.
Can my parent/guardian register me for a course or do we need to be together?
Your parent/guardian cannot register for you. You must be present when registering for a Driver Z course, whether you’re doing so in person at a broker’s office, an MPI Service Centre or over the phone.
Can I register alone or does my parent/guardian need to be with me?
As long as you’ve completed Steps 1 & 2 in advance, your parent/guardian doesn’t need to be with you to complete Step 3 of the process – registering for a course.
