Driver Z is MPI’s high school driver education program that uses a mix of in person, online and in–car learning to give students the knowledge and skills they need to drive safely and prevent collisions.
The one-year program creates a safe driving team that includes the student, a supervising driver and an instructor, who all work together toward the goal of helping the student learn the rules of the road and get their Class 5 Manitoba driver’s licence.

The course
Driver Z is an interactive program that is mapped into six learning zones, each offering fun and educational lessons that are set up like a game. Complete eLessons, attend in-person or virtual classes and practice what you’ve learned with a supervising driver in a vehicle to move through the zones on the map and earn points and stars as you go. As you rack up the points, you unlock progress badges.
Once you’re signed up, you’ll log on to MPI’s Driver Z website to complete eLessons, course work, and track your progress in an online practice log.
The cost
MPI is proud to offer this important course at a subsidized rate of $50.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Driver Z program mandatory for all high school students in Manitoba?
No, Driver Z is an optional and subsidized driver education program that MPI is pleased to offer throughout Manitoba. Private options are also available for students age 16 and older.
What are the benefits of taking Driver Z?
Driver Z offers affordable and comprehensive hands-on training for future drivers and is the only option in the province for students interested in obtaining their 5L licence at the age of 15 ½. Our statistics show that students who complete the program are more likely to pass their Class 5 road test in fewer attempts. That means you’ll be able to hit the road as a safe driver, faster!
I’ve already paid for the course, but I’ve changed my mind. Can I get a refund?
If you wish to withdraw from a course, you must cancel your registration at least 24 hours before the course start date to receive a full refund. If you withdraw from a course within 24 hours of the course start date, you will not receive a refund. If you withdraw prior to obtaining your Class 5L licence must provide a certificate signed by a qualified medical practitioner excusing your withdrawal to obtain a refund. After you’ve obtained your Class 5L licence, no refunds will be issued.
If you’d like to receive a refund, please visit your broker, an MPI Service Centre or call our Contact Centre at 204-985-7000 or toll-free at 1-800-665-2410.
Who is the primary contact for course communication?
The student registered for the program will be considered the primary point of contact. This means the course instructors will communicate directly with the student regarding all course-related matters (e.g., online assignments, in-car lesson scheduling, and other important updates). Therefore, if alternate contact details, such as co-pilot and/or parent/guardian name, phone number, or email address should be used, this information must be provided to the instructor.
Instructor contact information can be found in the top right-hand corner of your main student page within the Driver Z website. To access it:
- Click the three lines
- Click “Profile”
- Course Instructors are listed near the bottom of the page.
