Commercial vehicles

Commercial trucks and limited-use commercial trucks

A commercial vehicle is a truck or trailer combination used for business or commercial purposes and operated more than:

  • 30 km from the registered owner's place of business, if the business is not located in an urban municipality
  • 30 km from the municipal boundary, if the business is located in an urban municipality other than Winnipeg
  • 20 km from the City of Winnipeg municipal boundary, if the business is located in Winnipeg

Commercial vehicles can be registered as commercial trucks, commercial trailers or commercial driveaway units.

Limited-use commercial trucks have a gross vehicle weight of 4,500 kg or more, are used for commercial purposes other than gain or compensation and are operated less than or equal to:

  • 30 km from the registered owner’s place of business, if the business is not located in an urban municipality
  • 30 km from the municipal boundary, if the business is located in an urban municipality other than Winnipeg
  • 20 km from the City of Winnipeg municipal boundary, if the business is located in Winnipeg

A vehicle may also be designated a limited-use commercial truck depending on its specific use. See your Autopac agent for more information.

A commercially-plated vehicle (CT plates) operating solely within Manitoba can be registered at any Autopac agent or Manitoba Public Insurance Service Centre that handles commercial vehicle transactions.

Public service vehicles and limited-use public service vehicles

Public service vehicles, also known as common carrier vehicles, can be any motor vehicle, including passenger vehicles, used to transport people or goods for gain or compensation beyond city or municipal boundaries.

Limited-use public service vehicles have a gross vehicle weight of 4,500 kg or more and are used for transportation for gain or compensation and are operated less than or equal to:

  • 30 km from the registered owner’s place of business, if the business is not located in an urban municipality
  • 30 km from the municipal boundary, if the business is located in an urban municipality other than Winnipeg
  • 20 km from the City of Winnipeg municipal boundary, if the business is located in Winnipeg

A vehicle may also be designated a limited-use public service vehicle depending on its specific use. See your Autopac agent for more information.

Limited-use public service vehicles include vehicles used for transporting gravel, sand or other material for use in highway construction or maintenance.

The following original documents may be required to set up a new vehicle:

  • Bill(s) of sale
  • Lease agreement(s) – if vehicle(s) are leased from a leasing company
  • NVIS (if vehicle(s) are new vehicle(s) – never been registered)
  • Certificate(s) of inspection
  • Authority to Register/Exclusive Use Agreement(s) – (if owner/operators)
  • Transfer of Ownership Document(s) – (if vehicle(s) were previously owned by another person/company)
  • Proof of Third Party Liability Insurance for each vehicle

Regulated passenger vehicles

Regulated passenger vehicles are also categorized as commercial vehicles. Regulated passenger vehicles have a capacity of 11 or more, including the driver, and are not used exclusively for personal transportation.
