Road Safety

Carrying passengers safely

The Highway Traffic Act prohibits carrying passengers on mopeds, unless the passenger is under the age of six, in which case:

  • They must be in a seat designed specifically for carrying children on mopeds.
  • The seat must be equipped with a seatbelt that is used to secure the child at all times while the moped is in motion and a shield to prevent any part of their body or clothing from coming into contact with any moving part of the moped.
  • The seat must be securely attached to the moped, behind the regular seat and as far forward and in as low a position as practical.

Avoid carrying a child as a passenger until you are confident of your balance and control as the extra weight will change your vehicle's balance, steering, acceleration and braking. When carrying a child, always allow more room to maneuver and brake in traffic.
