Turning at a Red Light

Many intersections have safety cameras that capture motorists who failed to make a complete stop before turning at a red light.

This traffic offence will be enforced, as motorists are required by law to come to a complete stop at a red light before making a right-hand turn where permitted.

Rolling past the stop line at a red light creates a dangerous situation for pedestrians and cyclists who may be crossing in front of vehicles waiting at the red light.

Keep these points in mind and avoid a fine:

  • Motorists must stop behind the stop line or at the sign indicating where the stop line is.
  • Turn your signal on, make a complete stop, and check for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Slowly enter the intersection and complete the turn only when it’s safe to do so.

So remember, a proper stop keeps everyone safe and helps you avoid a penalty.
