Dear Editor,

Mr. Olsen's Nov. 26, 2001 letter about his "specific" auto insurance experience deserves a "general" response that is more relevant to your readers.

While we're pleased that Mr. Olsen had a positive experience in moving to another province, the reality is that, for the coverage, independent study after independent study have shown that Manitobans continue to get the best auto insurance value in Canada. While most auto insurance companies throughout Canada have increased rates, Manitoba Public Insurance has been able to hold the line for the last four years. This year, every premium payer will benefit from a one-time rebate that is returning more than $75 million.

Manitoba's success story has been documented by several independent third parties. Several of these studies are available online. For example, the Consumers Association of Canada (B.C. Branch) posted a study (www.cacbc.com) which shows, in about 90 per cent of the driver and vehicle scenarios outlined, Manitoba Public Insurance premiums came out the lowest in a cross-country comparison. In April of this year, the respected organization, Runzheimer Canada, (www.runzheimer.com) determined that Winnipeg was the most inexpensive of 11 major Canadian cities in which to operate a vehicle - primarily because of low insurance costs.

Fortunately, lower insurance rates do not mean inferior products or compromised service. MPI coverage is second to none and, in fact, is usually more generous than policies in other provinces. Our commitment to customer service is reflected in consistently high ratings from claimants.

Sincerely,

John Douglas Vice-President Corporate Public Affairs
Manitoba Public Insurance
