Manitoba Public Insurance and Ombudsman agree on premium repayment

Manitoba Public Insurance and the Provincial Ombudsman have agreed on a process to reimburse customers for premium overpayment due to incorrect vehicle descriptions on policies.

“We needed clarification from the Ombudsman on what would be fair, and we received it,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Marilyn McLaren. “The corporation values its good working relationship with the Ombudsman and we are pleased that we have resolved this today.”

The public auto insurer will refund premium overpayments for 2004, the year the corporation discovered that about 2,000 customers were paying a slightly higher rate because they had provided incorrect information to the corporation. The errors were discovered when new computer technology was introduced.

McLaren said the corporation is responsible to all Manitoba motorists, and always strives to strike the right balance between the needs of individuals and the motoring public as a whole.
