Keep your vehicle and belongings safe during the holiday season ― Manitoba Public Insurance

Theft can quickly ruin the joy of the holiday season and Manitobans are reminded that a few seconds of preventative measures could ensure happy travels.

Nearly 1,500 vandalism claims were opened last December with Manitoba Public Insurance. Many of these claims were the result of vehicle windows being smashed out, or door locks damaged, as thieves gained entry to a vehicle full of gifts and valuables.

“Whether it’s theft from the vehicle or theft of the vehicle, it’s a crime of opportunity,” said Donna Roed, Manager Auto Crime Prevention, Manitoba Public Insurance.

“If you eliminate the opportunity, you greatly reduce the odds of theft. It only takes a few seconds to move packages from the passenger compartment to the trunk.  Those few seconds can avoid hours of grief.”

As mall parking lots fill up due to extended store hours and families pack up for one of the heaviest travel times of the year, Manitoba Public Insurance reminds everyone of the simple precautions that can keep your vehicle, valuables and purchases safe.

Secure Your Vehicle

  • Always lock your vehicle and roll up the windows when parked.
  • Never leave your keys in the car.
  • Never hide a key in or around your car.

    Protect Your Property

  • Keep valuables/packages out of plain sight - put them in the trunk.
  • Don't leave personal and vehicle information in the glove compartment: keep it with you.

    Use Common Sense

  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Lock your garage and the vehicle in the garage.
  • If possible, avoid parking your vehicle in suspicious or unsafe areas.
  • When parking in the street, turn the wheels toward the curb and set the   parking brake.  These steps can prevent your vehicle from becoming a towing theft.

Key Features to Consider When Purchasing a Vehicle

  • Check to see whether the vehicle has a factory-installed immobilizer, activated by a computer chip in the key. If not, contact Manitoba Public Insurance to arrange for a low-cost after-market installation.
