Premium rebate facts
Early in May 2007, nearly 550,000 customers will receive refund cheques from Manitoba Public Insurance. Here’s what you should know about this rebate:
Who should expect a refund
- You will receive a rebate if you paid basic Autopac premiums for your 2005/06 insurance year. This is for policies that were renewed or started between March 1, 2005 and February 28, 2006.
How much you will receive
- The average rebate will be about $110.
- Your rebate will equal 10 per cent of the Basic Autopac premium you paid for your 2005/06 insurance year. The base amount on which the rebate is calculated is net of any refunds and discounts and will not include any:
- registration fees
- financing fees,
- interest costs, or
- extension products, such as lower deductibles or extra third-party liability coverage.
- The total amount refunded this year is $60 million. Combined with previous rebates, the total amount refunded to customers over the past six years is $200 million.
Why this rebate is being provided
- The Public Utilities board ordered this rebate because the corporation’s financial performance has been better than expected. For example, in recent years, the corporation has had good investment returns on the funds it keeps in reserve to help stabilize rates and meet the ongoing needs of claimants.
What to do if you don’t receive your cheque
- Please allow some time for your cheque to arrive.
- If you haven’t received a cheque by May 21, 2007, call us:
- Winnipeg: 985-7000
- Toll-free: 1-800-665-2410
- Deaf access: TTY/TDD 985-8832
If you’ve moved
- Our call centre or any broker can tell you whether a cheque has been mailed and whether the address we have for you is the correct one.
- If you didn’t report your change of address, your cheque will be sent to the last address we have on record. It will either be forwarded to you by Canada Post, or returned to Manitoba Public Insurance. We hold these returned cheques until the owners claim them.
If you receive someone else’s cheque
- You could receive the cheque of someone who used to live at your address, if that person didn’t notify us. If so, please drop off the cheque with any Autopac broker or mail the cheque back to us.
If the policy holder has since died
- If we were notified of the death, the cheque would be issued to the customer’s estate.
- If we weren’t notified, the cheque may be addressed to the deceased policy holder. If this is the case, an Autopac broker can update the customer record so the cheque can be reissued to the estate of the deceased. Proof in the form of a death certificate or obituary notice may be required.
