Don’t let the Grinch spoil the holidays: protect your vehicle and belongings!
Auto theft is a holiday shopping concern

The arrival of the holiday season can be a frenzied time for Manitobans in search of the perfect gift. But in their haste, many people make themselves easy prey for thieves patrolling streets and parking lots.

To help keep the holiday season a joyous one, Manitoba Public Insurance offers a few tips to motorists:

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Watch for suspicious persons around you. If you see someone or something that looks suspicious, report it to your local police department, store management or security personnel.
  • An electronic immobilizer is the best defence against auto theft. Manitoba Public Insurance offers a yearly discount of $40 off basic insurance and $5 each year on optional deductibles to Manitobans who purchase an aftermarket immobilizer meeting national theft deterrence standards.
  • Avoid the last minute rush or unexpected stop. It may cause you to lose your concentration and result in a person being less aware.
  • Park your vehicle in a well-lit and well-traveled area where other cars are parked and people are passing by. Don't isolate yourself. Try to shop with friends or family -- there is strength in numbers, as well as being a lot more fun.
  • When walking out to your car with your purchases, don't overload your arms or stack your bags or boxes so high you can't see anything in front of you. Have your car keys in your hand, ready to open your door.
  • When you load your car, try to place your items in the trunk, out of sight of possible burglars.
  • Remember to lock your car. Most car burglaries occur because the thief has spotted an easy target. If the burglar has easy access into your vehicle, the theft may take only seconds and no one may notice.
