Thanks
to the overwhelming support of students
from 33 Winnipeg schools, Manitoba
Public Insurance’s 2003 ‘Operation
Donation’ has proven to be
the most successful in the food
drive’s four-year history.
This
year’s campaign raised a record-smashing
80,000 pounds of food for Winnipeg
Harvest - more than tripling last
year’s contribution of 25,000
pounds.
At
the grand weigh-in this morning
at Winnipeg Harvest, the food donated
by participating schools and Manitoba
Public Insurance staff tipped the
scales at 40,000 pounds. Peak of
the Market quickly doubled that
tally with their matching donation.
“Operation
Donation has lived up to all its
expectations and gone beyond that,”
said David Northcott, Winnipeg Harvest
executive co-ordinator. “It
was truly a record setting year
for this project. All of the students
and schools involved exhibited tremendous
community spirit.”
Based
on their donation of 3,592 pounds
of food (21.1 pounds per student)
the students from Samuel Burland
School took home the Manitoba Public
Insurance/Winnipeg Harvest/Peak
of the Market Trophy and accompanying
prize. J.H. Bruns Collegiate, which
collected 11,571 pounds of food
(18.6 pounds per student) was runner
up.
Operation
Donation has grown in both spirit
and food raised over its short,
four-year history. In its inaugural
year four schools participated.
This year’s event swelled
to 33 schools!
“It
was tremendous to see the spirit
of the students and how they responded
to the challenge,” said Larry
McIntosh, President and CEO of Peak
of the Market. “We couldn’t
have been more pleased to have been
involved with such a great project.”
“Manitoba
Public Insurance believes strongly
in helping to strengthen our communities,”
said John Douglas, Vice-President
of Public Affairs with Manitoba
Public Insurance. “We’re
very proud of the young Manitobans
who have taken a leadership role
and given so much to their communities
through Operation Donation.”
