This
Halloween, as part of its pedestrian
safety program, Manitoba Public
Insurance is distributing more than
124,000 safety flashers to schoolchildren
across the province.
Halloween
is frighteningly good fun; but “lighting
up the night” with Manitoba
Public Insurance safety flashers
ensures it’s safe, too.
Child
pedestrians are at particular risk
because their perceptions are not
fully matured. Young children won’t
always see or hear a vehicle coming.
Or they may think that the headlights
are “eyes” and that
the car can “see” them.
Mix in the excitement that comes
with the thought of goodies at every
door, and you could have a recipe
for trouble.
That’s
why Manitoba Public Insurance is
providing reusable, battery-operated
safety flashers to every Manitoba
student from Kindergarten through
Grade Six. The visibility of the
flashing clip-on buttons was demonstrated
this afternoon at Athlone School,
where more than 400 children enjoyed
a special Halloween event. The assembly
culminated in a full costume trick-or-treaters
parade in the gymnasium, with the
safety flashers forming the final
piece of each outfit.
“We’re
very pleased that these safety flashers
will serve their purpose long after
the last piece of candy is gone,”
said John Douglas, Vice President
of Public Affairs. “These
buttons can easily be clipped to
a jacket or backpack, so children
can ‘light up the night’
any time they step outside after
dark.”
Adds
Principal Margaret Ann Attenborrow:
“I think these flashers are
a terrific idea. They’re simple
to use, and very effective, too.
I’m sure that parents will
put this safety initiative to good
use all year round.”
Manitoba
Public Insurance also provided a
letter for parents that outlined
other tips to keep youngsters safe
while trick-or-treating.
