Holiday
partiers let someone else take the wheel
Operation Red Nose and MPI battle drinking and driving
An
unbeatable combination of community minded-volunteers and responsible
partygoers has again allowed Operation Red Nose and Manitoba Public
Insurance (MPI) to keep almost 3,000 drinking drivers off our roadways
over the holiday season.
Operation
Red Nose, which was available to motorists in Winnipeg, Brandon,
Flin Flon, The Pas, and Thompson, reported a total of 2,748 rides
given through the month of December.
"Operation
Red Nose directly contributes to the ongoing health and well-being
of Manitoba drivers - and that goes to the very heart of why MPI
exists," said John Douglas, MPI Vice President of Public Affairs.
"The
program addresses our number one road safety priority - drinking
and driving - and it draws its strength from Manitobans who give
freely of their own time to help make a safer community for everyone.
"That
is why MPI is proud to be the major corporate supporter of Operation
Red Nose in Manitoba." Winnipeg's Operation Red Nose provided 1,264
rides to motorists who made the right decision not to drink and
drive. Brandon
provided 929 rides, The Pas 284, Flin Flon 168 and Thompson 103.
About
40 per cent of all fatalities and about 20 per cent of all injuries
resulting from motor vehicle crashes in Manitoba are alcohol related.
An average of one Manitoban is killed each week as the result of
an impaired driving crash.
