Record-setting claims day for MPI
Motorists are reminded to drive safely to avoid collisions

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) marked a dubious record for the year 2000.

About 1,700 claims were registered with the corporation on Monday, December 11. The year's high will result in an estimated pay out of nearly $5 million. The previous high this year was on November 20 when 1,531 claims were registered.

Despite the high claims volume, MPI staff is committed to providing the best service possible. However, because claims centres are busy, customer appointments may be delayed longer than the usual wait of up to three working days.

"The combination of bitterly cold weather, high winds and heavy travel has resulted in ice-polished roads in many areas of the province," said Paul Allen, Manager of Road Safety with MPI. "Unfortunately for those involved, many of these collisions could have been prevented had people simply driven to the conditions of the road."

With increased travel during the holiday season, MPI wishes to remind all motorists to adjust their driving to meet the road conditions. Here are a few tips to remember when travelling:

  • Speed limits aren't goals - they're maximums under IDEAL conditions! SLOW DOWN when conditions are poor.
  • Maintain a RoadWise distance of about six seconds between you and the vehicle ahead of you when the road is slippery.
  • Clearly signal your intentions before lane changing, stopping or turning.
  • If you should become involved in an accident, call 985-7000 in Winnipeg/1-800-665-2410 outside Winnipeg to report your claim. During this busy time, we ask for your patience as we deal with a higher than normal volume of calls.

Despite the record claims volume, Monday's record will not affect 2001 rates. Last month the Pubic Utilities Board approved a one-time 16.6 per cent surplus discount on all Autopac policies purchased or renewed beginning March 1, 2001. The average Manitoba passenger vehicle owner will pay $106 less when they renew their basic Autopac policy next year.
