The Manitoba Driver, from Manitoba Public Insurance About 300 words It’s the one we’ve all been waiting for: the May-long weekend. Unlike other long weekends throughout the year, this one can set the tone for all the rest. After months of being confined to the indoors, the anticipation of getting out of town for “May-long” can make us all overly eager when we hit the road. “This weekend is the annual kick off for many cottagers and campers,” says Clif Eden, Road Safety Manager of Manitoba Public Insurance. “We encourage everyone to drive safely so you can enjoy it for years to come.” “We see an increase in traffic-related fatalities and injuries every long weekend compared to other weekends in the year. We all need a heightened awareness on the highway when we’re heading to and from the lake or cottage on long weekends.” According to Manitoba Public Insurance claims statistics, 36 people were killed between 2004 and 2008 in traffic collisions on the long weekends from May to September. Another 1,710 people were injured or seriously injured ─ many deaths and injuries that could have been avoided. These crashes can be attributed to many factors, says Eden, citing heavier traffic volumes and a general level of impatience among drivers. The best approach to the long-weekend drive is to make the journey as important as the destination. “Keep yourself, your family and those around you safe by driving defensively,” says Eden. “Make it a weekend you won’t forget – for all the right reasons.” “In addition to heavier traffic, the increase in long-weekend traffic accidents could also be caused by people not buckling up, distracted drivers and, of course, driving while impaired. Speeding is also a contributing factor,” says Eden. “Stay alert, plan an appropriate amount of travel time and slow down,” suggests Eden. “Excessive speeds reduce the amount of time you have to respond to hazards and make decisions.” The May-long weekend should be the beginning of a fun-filled summer. Safe driving is the beginning of that journey. --30-- © 2010 Manitoba Public Insurance |
