Insurance Fraud > Hit and Run
A co-operative venture between Manitoba Public Insurance and Brandon police provides a one-stop reporting service for hit and run claims in Brandon. Legitimate hit-and-run victims can file their claim with Manitoba Public Insurance, and fill out the required police report, all at one location.
Besides making the hit-and-run reporting process more convenient for the vast majority of Brandon drivers filing legitimate claims, it also helps reduce the number of drivers attempting to file fraudulent claims.
The Brandon Hit-and-Run program has been in operation in Brandon for over two years. It's estimated the program saved Manitoba Public Insurance nearly $70,000 in its first year of operation. These savings were achieved by fraud artists walking away from their claims, or Manitoba Public Insurance denying the claim after investigation. Hit-and-Run vehicles are inspected by an Manitoba Public Insurance estimator, police officer and SIU investigator.
A similar Hit-and-Run program was piloted in Winnipeg, ending in March 2002. For more information on reporting a Hit-and-Run claim in Winnipeg or other locations, refer to Reporting a Claim.
