Step up to the challenge of winter driving!
High snowbanks? Narrow streets? Reduced traction? Welcome to winter!
Here are some helpful reminders about some of the worst that winter throws at you.
High snowbanks at intersections
You may need to inch forward and stop several times to see past the snowbank. At night, watch for approaching headlights. When turning right, hug the right curb.
Remember, if you have a stop sign, it's up to you to enter the intersection safely.
Narrow streets
Parked cars and snow can make residential streets even narrower. Remember, you must share the road with oncoming cars. Pull over when there's space. A little patience, cooperation and courtesy will help you pass safely.
Also, top up your windshield washer with anti-freeze rated at
-40°C
or colder and replace worn wiper blades.
Take it slow in the snow
The posted speed limit is for ideal conditions. When it's slippery, take it slower and increase your braking distance. When you accelerate, turn or brake, do it gradually.
The hazard of black ice
Darker pavement is a tell-tale sign of black ice. Although it can be anywhere, look for it in shaded areas and at intersections, especially.
To keep control, avoid cruise control
Constant speed can be hazardous when road conditions are changeable.
