Time to do the groundwork for safe winter driving
In preparation for the ice, snow and slush that’s coming this winter, remember the important role your tires play to keep you safe on the road. Consider the advantages of winter tires – and be sure to check all tires for pressure as the temperature falls.
Winter tires provide more control
- A full set of winter tires can provide more control in winter conditions than regular all-season tires.
- A set of four matching tires is recommended to ensure uniform handling characteristics through acceleration, stopping, and steering – which results in control and stability.

- Look for tires marked with a snowflake/ mountain image that indicates they meet winter traction performance standards.
Check winter tire pressure
- Properly inflated tires enhance handling, traction and durability.
- Tires lose an average of one pound pressure for each five-degree Celsius drop in temperature. Being under-inflated by as little as three pounds (a 15-degree drop in temperature) is enough to affect their performance.
- Consult your vehicle manual or the information attached to the vehicle doorframe for correct tire pressure – and use a pressure gauge to check tires twice a month.
