Summer Safety: Sharing the road with cyclists
As the seasons change, so do our
driving habits and the hazards
we need to look out for. With the
official launch of spring, drivers and
cyclists need to work together to keep
Manitoba’s roads safe this summer.
While road safety is a shared responsibility between drivers and cyclists, drivers need to be extra careful when:
Passing cyclists
Change lanes when passing
someone on a bike. If that isn’t
possible, leave at least one metre
between you and the cyclist when
you pass.
Turning
Always shoulder check before
making a right turn because there
might be a cyclist right beside you
who isn’t turning.
Parking
Check your side-view mirror and
look behind you before opening
your door after parking on the street to make sure there are no
cyclists passing on your left side.
Intersections
Be alert for children riding on the
sidewalk at intersections and
driveways.
In 2008, 235 people were injured and three people lost their
lives because of vehicle-bicycle
collisions. By sharing the road and
having an increased awareness of
cycling traffic, we can all work to
reduce risk on Manitoba’s roads
and highways this summer.
