Buckle up and spread the word: seatbelts save lives
Even though 90 per cent of Manitobans are buckling up when we drive, 30 per cent of us don’t feel comfortable asking our passengers to put on their seatbelts.
The next time you’re wondering whether to remind your passengers to buckle up, consider these statistics:
- 40 per cent of the people killed and 13 per cent of those seriously injured in car crashes in 2008 were not wearing their seatbelts;
- 32 lives were saved and 3,440 injuries were prevented in 2008 because seatbelts were worn at the time of the crash;
- People who don’t wear their seatbelts are 25 times more likely to be killed in a collision than those who do and four times more likely to be seriously injured;
- Seatbelt use in rural areas of Manitoba is slightly lower than the provincial and national averages, so remember to buckle up no matter where you are.
Help reduce risk on Manitoba roads and highways by reminding your family and friends to buckle up.
