Use good judgment to pass safely
On a highway, with one lane each way, passing takes care and sound judgment.
If a solid line is dividing the lanes, don’t pass. And remember, when you're passing, the speed limit still applies.
Follow these steps to pass safely:
- Check ahead for oncoming vehicles.
- Check your side and rearview mirrors for vehicles approaching you from behind.
- Signal.
- Check your blind spot to the left.
- Look ahead again – make sure you have ample time and space to enter the oncoming lane and pass the vehicle in front of you.
- Once you've passed safely, check your blind spot to the right, signal right, and return to the right lane.
Can’t see what’s ahead? Wait until you can.
If you’re climbing a hill or rounding a curve, you may not have a clear view of oncoming traffic.
Before trying to pass, wait until you have a clear view ahead.
