As spring makes way for summer, remember that maintaining the following habits all year will save you money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Ease in to it. Aggressive stop-and-go driving can use up to
35 per cent more fuel and only gains two-and-a-half minutes per hour.
Drive to reduce wear and tear. An aggressive driving style increases wear and tear on your vehicle’s engine and transmission. The associated need for hard braking also decreases the life of your vehicle’s brakes.
Slow down. In addition to being dangerous and against the law, higher speeds also reduce your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.
The warmer temperatures will also make it easier to keep up with the maintenance of your vehicle. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations and remember to check your levels regularly.
Check your oil level monthly. A low oil level increases friction in the engine, causing it to work harder and use more fuel.
Check your tire pressure. A single tire that is underinflated by four PSI
can increase your fuel consumption by two per cent. Check the pressure
every month.
