Drive safe and enjoy the long weekend

According to Manitoba Public Insurance statistics, from 2005-2009, 23 fatalities were a result of collisions during summertime long weekends. Another 1,195 people were injured in traffic accidents.

With an increased number of vehicles on the road on long weekends, speeding and impaired driving become even bigger problems. You can help reduce risk on the road.

Be patient

Plan an appropriate amount of time to get to your destination. If you are travelling during peak times prepare to wait in long lineups. Don't move in and out of traffic just to move up a few spaces and save a few minutes – a lot of head on collisions are a result of impatience.

Don't drink and drive

The sun can magnify the effect of alcohol. Combine that with being tired after a busy day and even one drink is too much before driving. Avoid a deadly combination – if you drink don't drive.

To keep you safe, additional enforcement will be on the roads during the long weekend.

Keep these tips in mind to have a safe long weekend and don't forget to buckle up!
