Looking to cross safely? Find a crosswalk.
The safest place to cross the street is at a crosswalk. You'll find most crosswalks at intersections.
But sometimes you'll find special crosswalks, with flashing overhead lights, between intersections. These are called pedestrian corridors. At all crosswalks, including pedestrian corridors, drivers and pedestrians need to do their part for a safe crossing.
Safe steps for drivers
When you're approaching a crosswalk, take extra care by following these steps:
- Slow down.
- At pedestrian corridors, prepare to stop when the overhead lights start flashing.
- Do not pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks.
Once pedestrians are crossing, wait until they've reached the other side before proceeding.
Safe steps for pedestrians
- At pedestrian corridors, activate the flashing lights and hold out your arm.
- At all crosswalks, try to make eye contact with drivers. Before crossing, you need to be sure they've seen you.
- Before stepping out, make sure all vehicles have stopped completely.
