Stay safe when cycling
Bike to Work Day is June 24. As more people use their bikes to get to work, it's important for them to know how to ride safely and how and when to use diamond lanes.
Diamond lanes:
- Cyclists are permitted to use diamond lanes during designated times.
- Signage is placed along designated routes to inform cyclists when the diamond lanes are in effect.
- When sharing the lane with a bus, slow down and remain behind the bus.
Ride safely:
Wear a helmet
- Always wear an approved bike helmet that has a recognized safety standards association such as ANSI, SNELL or CSA. Most helmets last for five years but should be replaced earlier if damaged or significantly faded.
Ride Defensively
- Observe the rules of the road by using hand signals and, if riding with others, ride in single file. Remember to shoulder-check before turning or changing lanes.
Stay on the Road
- It's illegal to drive a bicycle on the sidewalk that has a rear wheel diameter greater than 410 mm (16 inches). See and be seen
- Install front and back lights or reflectors on your bike so you are visible when riding after dark.
