Back to school

Driving Tips > Safety Columns

It's back to school and that means that there's more children and traffic in and around school zones.

Following are some tips to remember when driving or getting your children to school.

School zone rules

It's illegal to pass a moving vehicle in a school zone within 15 minutes of school opening or closing, or any time that children are on the grounds.

Safety patrols

Watch for school patrols and be prepared to stop. Wait until kids crossing the street have reached the other side, and patrollers have returned to their posts, before proceeding.

School bus rules

Regardless of your direction of travel, you must stop at least five metres from the bus when its lights are flashing or other warning devices are activated. Remain stopped until the signal is turned off or the bus starts moving. The only exception is when you approach from the opposite direction and there is a physical barrier such as a boulevard or median between you and the bus.
