Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Turning at a Wide Boulevard
Intersections with wider than usual boulevards sometimes leave drivers unclear about the proper way to proceed. A good example is Broadway and Smith in downtown Winnipeg.
Here's the situation. You're
turning off eastbound Broadway left onto Smith. Once westbound traffic
clears, it's safe to proceed. But, there's a red light in front of you--is
it legal to proceed and make the turn?
In this situation, some drivers think they are required to wait for the other light to turn green. According to the rules of the road, you're simply completing a left turn onto a one-way street and when the coast is clear, you can proceed into the closest available lane... even if the street you're turning onto has a red light.
In Manitoba, 39% of all collisions happen at intersections--some caused by this type of confusion.
Occasionally, you'll encounter a second traffic light and signs instructing you to stop and wait. But if it's just a left turn through a wide boulevard--go ahead and complete your turn when the traffic flow allows.
