Stop Signs

The stop sign is one of the most common traffic signs you'll encounter and it's also one of the most important.

The stop sign is pretty easy to understand – drivers must come to a complete stop.

You must stop before the stop line. Or if there is no line, stop before the sidewalk.

Before proceeding, you must look for other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users who may be entering the intersection.

Give them the right-of-way and when it is clear, you may proceed through the intersection.

However, you may need to slowly move forward for a better view of traffic, to see if it's safe.

A driver who just slows down and glides through the intersection without making a complete stop has a higher chance of not seeing a pedestrian, cyclist or another vehicle.

Make a complete stop and be sure the intersection is safe to enter. This can prevent a serious collision.

The illustrations below explain the correct places for stopping:

1 Stop at the stop line before a marked crosswalk.
2 Where there is no stop line, stop before the marked crosswalk.
3 If there is no stop line or marked crosswalk at the intersection, stop before the sidewalk, out of the way of pedestrians.
4 If there is no stop line, marked crosswalk or sidewalk, stop and yield right-of-way.
