How to Make a Safe Left Turn at a Traffic Light >
Turning from a 2-way to a 2-way Street
When making a left turn,
be sure you are in the correct lane (The lane
just to the right of the dividing line). Indicate your intention to turn left 30 metres before the intersection.
If you are approaching an intersection where the light is green, check to make sure the intersection is clear in front of you, move ahead to just before the centre of the intersection and just to the right of the directional dividing line. This is called “establishing”.
When entering the intersection keep your wheels straight. Do not angle your vehicle in the intersection. In the event of being rear-ended, keeping your wheels straight will prevent you from being pushed into on-coming traffic.
When turning, make sure you turn to the
"left of the center" of the intersection. This means you must turn before
you reach the center.
If established in the intersection and unable to complete the left turn when the light is green because of pedestrian or oncoming traffic, do not turn. Wait until the light changes from green to amber. You must then complete your turn as quickly and safely as possible. You may even complete the turn on a red light. Traffic from opposing sides must yield to you; this is required of them by law.
Always be alert for drivers coming from the opposite direction who are attempting to race an amber light.
If there is another vehicle already established in the intersection, you must wait behind the stop line. Two cars should not be established in the same intersection, in the same direction, at once.
It you are not already established in the intersection, you must not attempt the left turn when the light changes from green to amber.
If the vehicle that is established in the intersection completes the left turn and the light is still green, you may then advance and establish yourself in the intersection.
