Speeding puts us all at risk
Speeding plays a role in more than 1,600 collisions each year, causing 700 injuries and 28 deaths on Manitoba roads. It’s a contributing factor in:
- 25 per cent of all fatal collisions;
- seven per cent of all injury-related collisions.
Speeding doesn’t pay, either. Recent changes to the speeding fine structure mean your fine is directly related to the exact speed you’re travelling over the speed limit. For example, at 10 kilometres over the speed limit, your ticket will be $177.50, and it goes up from there:
- at 15 kilometres over, you pay $241.25;
- at 17 kilometres over, you pay $266.75;
- at 20 kilometres over, you pay $304.25;
- all fines are significantly more if you’re caught speeding in a construction zone.
- drive the speed limit or to road conditions;
- use cruise control on the highway when conditions are safe;
- leave earlier and get there safely.
