Keep your vehicle in good shape for safety - and because it’s good for the planet!

A poorly-maintained vehicle can boost fuel consumption by up to 15 per cent and increase greenhouse gas emissions. It’s also not as reliable and safe for you or your loved ones. These simple vehicle maintenance tips can help protect you and the planet.

Give your tires the attention they need

Under-inflated tires increase your vehicle’s rolling resistance and fuel consumption, so check your tire pressure once a month. The correct tire pressure for your vehicle is located on a sticker typically found on the driver’s side doorjamb, or in the glove box or trunk. It will also be in your owner’s manual. Over- or under-inflated tires will result in poor vehicle handling and increase the chances of a blow out when driving with a heavier load at higher speeds – especially in summer!

Remember to check and change your oil regularly

Engine oil loses its viscosity over time. This reduces its ability to lubricate the moving parts of your engine. A low oil level or oil that is worn out will increase friction and engine wear as well as reduce your fuel efficiency. Check your oil level regularly and change it in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Remember to use the grade of oil recommended and consider choosing a brand that is rated as being “Energy Conserving”.

Is your air filter dirty?

An air filter that is clogged will reduce performance of your vehicle and increase the fuel required to maintain the same level you are used to. Dust that gets through the air filter will enter the engine and act like sandpaper on moving parts. A dirty air filter could be costing you as much as 10 per cent on your mileage. Make sure to check out your owner’s manual to find out your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. Deal with problems promptly and avoid expensive repairs.
