Tow Safely
If you're planning a summer holiday that includes hauling a trailer, get there safely by following these tips:
- After connecting the electrical, test to make sure all
the turn signals and brake lights work.
- Check that the hitch and chain connections are
secure before driving.
- Don't carry passengers in a moving trailer – it's
illegal and dangerous.
- When passing another vehicle, allow for at
least twice the normal passing distance. When
returning to your original lane, allow for enough
space for the trailer length.
- On double lane highways, stay in the right lane as
much as possible so faster vehicles can easily pass.
- Drive at a speed that allows for twice the normal
stopping distance.
- If it's rainy or windy, slow down.
- Don't drive on the shoulder.
- Be extra careful going down hills as the trailer
provides extra momentum.
