Sharing the road: diamond lanes
Knowing how and when to use diamond lanes increases safety for both cyclists and motorists. When driving on a route with diamond lanes, remember:
Wear a helmet:
Make sure your helmet fits properly, is bright in colour and has never been in a crash. Check to make sure it has been approved by a recognized safety standards association such as ANSI, SNELL or CSA.
Ride defensively
Observe the rules of the road by using hand signals and, if riding in a group, ride in single file. Don’t dart in and out of traffic and always shoulder-check before turning or changing lanes.
Stay on the road
It’s illegal and dangerous to ride a bicycle that has a rear-wheel diameter greater than 410mm (16 inches) on a sidewalk.
See and be seen
When riding after dark, use front and rear lights on your bike, put reflective tape on your helmet and wear reflective clothing.
