Slow down for road construction
Road construction season is upon us
and it's important you know how to keep yourself and others safe when driving through construction zones.
Observe the speed limit
Speed limits are lower in construction zones because of narrow lanes, gravel, workers and equipment on the road. Slow down as soon as you see the warning signs.
Construction zone speed limits are normally 60 km/h in higher speed or rural areas and 30 or 40 km/h in urban areas. Fines for speeding in construction zones are substantially higher than regular speeding fines. Construction zone speed limits apply whether workers are present or not, unless signage specifies "when workers are present".
Expect the unexpected
Construction zone repair equipment may suddenly enter or exit the roadway. Always obey the flag person and leave extra stopping distance in case the vehicle ahead has to stop suddenly.
Watch for barricades and lane closings
Don't crowd barricades and lane markers set up at construction zones, knocking them over creates a hazard for other drivers and construction workers.
When lanes ahead are closing, merge into the remaining lane well in advance.
Stay off the shoulder
When vehicles are stopped for construction, don't try to pass on the shoulder. It's illegal and unsafe.
