Use good judgment to pass safely
On a two-lane highway, with one lane in each direction, passing can be dangerous and requires sound judgment.
You can safely pass by following these steps:
- Check ahead for oncoming vehicles.
- Check side and rearview mirrors for
vehicles approaching from behind.
- Signal.
- Check your blind spot to the left.
- Look ahead again – make sure you have ample time and space to enter the oncoming lane and safely pass the vehicle in front of you.
- Once you've passed safely, check your blind spot to the right, signal and return to the right lane.
Other things to keep in mind are:
- If you don't have a clear view of oncoming traffic wait to pass until you have a clear view ahead.
- Don't pass when a solid yellow line separates you and traffic travelling in the opposite direction.
- The speed limit still applies when you're passing.
