Boost your intersection IQ
Many of us approach intersections without much thought. But intersections need your close attention – especially if you're turning left.
Do yourself a good turn
Where should you position yourself in an intersection to turn left?
Stay to the left of centre. That way, traffic following you can pass.
And remember: unless you have a turning light, you must yield to oncoming traffic. If you turn left unsafely and crash, you're likely at-fault.
Baffled by wide boulevards?
Turning left from streets with wide boulevards, such as Broadway, can be puzzling.
When you're waiting in the boulevard opening, which traffic light controls your turn? The light on the street you're turning from, or the light on the street you're turning to?
The answer: your light is always on the street you're turning from.
Intersections 101
A green light doesn't guarantee your safety. Check carefully before entering the intersection.
When it's slippery, slow down early for traffic lights and stop signs.
If traffic is backed up from the intersection, don't pass in the right lane. Someone or something may be crossing ahead.
