Use your vehicle’s early warning systems
Headlights aren’t just for night driving, and horns aren’t for venting your anger. They’re important communication devices that can help you prevent accidents.
Along with your brake lights and hazard signals, they can be used to alert other drivers of unexpected situations.
Use your headlights:
- When it’s cloudy, raining, snowing or foggy.
- Any time you have trouble seeing other cars on the road. Other drivers will be having trouble seeing you, too.
- Even in the daytime so other drivers can see you better. Vehicles built after 1989 have daytime running lights.
- When necessary to get another driver’s attention.
Use your horn:
- To alert other road users of possible hazards. Don’t honk if you’re angry or upset that a car ahead of you is going slowly. The driver may be ill, lost or having vehicle problems.
When you have car trouble:
- Brake, signal and pull off the road. Turn on your emergency flashers after you stop. If it’s safe, lift and brace the hood to signal a problem to others.
If you see an accident ahead:
- Warn drivers behind you by activating your hazard signals.
