Changes to Winnipeg streets help both cyclists and drivers
Whether you’re cycling or driving, you’ve likely noticed some changes to Winnipeg’s roads that make it safer for our growing cycling community.
Bike lanes and sharrows encourage cooperation between cyclists and motorists to share our streets safely.
Bike lanes
Bike lanes are dedicated road space for cyclists, identified by pavement markings and dividing lines.
Motorists should stay out of these lanes except to turn or park, and should always cross these lanes with caution. Cyclists are encouraged to stay within these dedicated lanes and be cautious of vehicles crossing into their path, particularly at intersections.
Sharrows
Sharrows are designated roadways shared by motorists and cyclists. These curb lanes are marked with pavement markings and signs. Motorists need to be cautious of cyclists in these lanes and provide adequate room for cyclists to ride safely. Cyclists should stay within these lanes, which are intentionally widened to accommodate both motorists and cyclists.
Whether you’re a cyclist or a motorist, please:
Road safety is a shared responsibility between cyclists and motorists. By working together, we can all help to reduce risk on the road.
