Changing Conditions
The days are getting longer and the temperature is rising – spring has arrived.
The change in season requires drivers to adjust their driving habits to prepare for the following seasonal hazards:
Potholes
Potholes can cause damage to your vehicle and interrupt traffic flow. You can reduce or avoid the damage by taking these precautions:
- Avoid them whenever possible by looking ahead of you, so you can prepare to change lanes or slow down.
- Avoid the curb lane when possible because that's where potholes are most commonly found.
- Slow down when driving through puddles, which can hide deep potholes.
Bridges
Bridges and overpasses freeze first and become slippery because they don't get the benefit of whatever heat is left in the ground. Winds can also be much stronger over the surface of high bridges and overpasses. Here are some things to consider when approaching a bridge or overpass:
- Reduce your speed.
- Leave extra room between you and the vehicles ahead of you.
- Watch for signs that other drivers are having difficulty controlling their vehicle.
