Be prepared for anything: What you should have in your vehicle

Many Manitobans put winter emergency kits in their cars, but you should be prepared year-round. Here are some ideas.

Lighten up

equipmentYou may have car trouble or get stuck, after dark. Carry emergency flares or reflective hazard markers so that passing vehicles can see you. You should also carry a working flashlight so you can see what you’re doing.

Remember that even in spring and summer it can get chilly in Manitoba, especially at night. Carry a warm blanket or a lightweight reflective emergency blanket in case you’re stuck in your vehicle waiting for help. Your kit should contain matches, and a candle in a can to help keep you warm – but if you use it, remember to keep a window partly open to provide fresh air.

Accidents can happen

Keep a first aid kit with bandages and dressings, antiseptic ointment and tape in your vehicle at all times.

Care for your spare

Make sure you have a properly inflated spare tire in your vehicle, along with the tools you’ll need to change a tire (jack, tire iron).

Don’t forget your map

If you’re travelling to a new area, plan your route in advance and remember to bring a map. If possible, arrange for a navigator. If you’re driving in remote areas where you could be stuck for some time, bring non-perishable food.
