Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Idle Zones
You may be seeing more IDLE FREE signs around the city. They're being distributed to child-centered locations in Winnipeg where unnecessary idling occurs. Here's why.
- Leaving your vehicle idling while waiting to pick-up your child is not only bad for the environment, it sends a confusing signal to children which can become a traffic safety concern.
- When the engine is on but the vehicle is not moving, kids don't know if it's safe to cross in front or behind or at all. The only way kids know that a vehicle is not going to move is if the engine is off.
- Children are often below the sight lines for a driver which can lead to terrible accidents especially when visibility is obscured by exhaust fog.
Local air quality is also a concern especially in front of schools, recreation centres and daycares. For heat, run the engine periodically. But remember that ten seconds of idling burns more fuel than restarting the engine.
