Swinging Out Before Turning Right
One of the most common
habits drivers have concerning right turns is swinging-out
to the left before turning right.
Unless you are driving a large truck, this is completely unnecessary and dangerous. If there's a car in the lane to your left, you could end up causing a collision.
Drivers often shy away from the turn because they are concerned about scraping the rear wheel during the turn. Simply slow down a little more to avoid contact with the curb, and turn into the lane nearest to the curb--unless it is blocked within 30 metres of the intersection.
In that case, turn into the next closest lane, if it is safe to do so. Your turn indicator should be on at least 30 metres ahead of an intersection. That distance increases to 150 metres outside the city.
All normal-sized vehicles should have no problem turning left or right, without swinging out first.
