Submerged Vehicles

A vehicle crash into water has the highest mortality rate of any type of single vehicle accident. People usually die of drowning because they panic, make bad decisions and take too long to get out of their vehicle.

Gordon Giesbrech from the University of Manitoba has submersed about 80 vehicles with people in them. He says “usually you can survive but you must act quickly and correctly. You have about one minute and you must get out through your window. Reaching for your cell phone will only waste valuable time. Rescue personnel cannot get to you within one minute.”

If your vehicle is in the water remembered four words: seatbelt, window, children, out.

First don’t panic. Undo your seatbelt, open or break a window, undo your children’s seatbelts. Quickly push your children out the window, and follow immediately.

A quick reaction will improve your odds of getting out alive.
