Rail Crossing Safety
Regardless of what you drive, in a collision with a train, the train will always win. That’s why we need to be extra careful when at rail crossings. A collision with a train is almost certain to result in serious or fatal injuries.
What is also certain? These collisions are totally avoidable.
A common mistake is made by stopping on the tracks while waiting at a red light. Before you enter the crossing area, make sure you can clear the tracks. Otherwise, stop well before the point where the crossing arm comes down. Where there are no crossing arms, trains appear to be traveling slower than they really are, and trying to “beat the train” is extremely dangerous.
School buses stop for all rail crossings, but the flashing lights and stop sign won’t be activated. You are not required to stop behind the school bus.
In Winnipeg and around the province, there are plenty of opportunities to make a safe rail crossing decision.
