Passing on a Highway
On a highway, you’ve probably encountered slower moving vehicles. Passing at high speeds can be dangerous, so here is the proper procedure to ensure you do so safely.
When you want to pass:
- First check that you are allowed to pass. If there are double solid lines on the road, you must wait for a broken line before you pass.
- Check your mirrors and do a shoulder check to see if you can change lanes safely. If the lane is clear, put on your signal. Check again and change lanes if safe.
- Pass the slower moving vehicle. Remember – it is against the law to exceed the speed limit even when passing.
- Once the vehicle you are passing is visible in your rearview mirror, shoulder check and signal before returning to the other lane when safe.
On a two-lane highway, be extra cautious as you must also watch for on-coming traffic. And remember, slower moving vehicles should stay in the far right lane.
