When Traffic Lights Malfunction
When traffic lights malfunction, police officers show up to direct traffic safely through the affected intersection. Here's what you should do before the police get there:
- Be aware of the vehicles in or approaching the intersection. Inattention can be dangerous.
- Treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
- Stop, look both ways and yield right-of-way.
- If two vehicles arrive at the same time, yield to the one on your right.
- If several vehicles arrive at the same time, take turns crossing the intersection.
- If traffic lights are flashing red in all directions, treat as four-way stop.
If you see broken traffic lights in Winnipeg, call 986-6222 to report the problem. Out of town, call your local police detachment and when the police do arrive to direct traffic, follow their directions carefully.
