Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Silent Hybrid Dangers
Hybrid vehicles are growing in popularity. While there are many advantages to owning a hybrid as drivers of these vehicles we must be aware that sometimes road users rely on audio cues. Because hybrids use battery power at times, they don’t make the same type of traffic noise that pedestrians are used to.
As a driver be extra cautious when you see pedestrians with a guide dog or white mobility cane. They can’t see you or hear your hybrid engine.
Children near the roadway should be treated with the same caution.
When existing a parking garage be aware that pedestrians don’t have visual or audio cues to know you are coming. Also cyclists sharing the roadway could make a quick street movement while not being aware that you’re approaching from behind.
If you’re driving a hybrid vehicle remember that people in low visibility situations won’t see you, and may not hear you either.
