Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Fuel Consumption
There isn't much we can do about the price of gas at the pump. But if we pay attention to some of our driving habits, we can reduce the amount of fuel we consume while becoming safer drivers.
Choosing a slower speed on the highway makes you less likely to be involved in an accident that can cause injuries. And a car moving at 90 km/h uses about 15% less fuel than a car moving at 105 km/h.
Regular servicing of your vehicle can save you money. Fouled plugs and dirty air and fuel filters make for an inefficient engine that wastes gas.
Once the engine is running smoothly, go easy on the gas and brakes. Aggressive driving is dangerous and uses up to 20% more gas than controlled driving.
Unless you need the engine running for heat, shut it off when waiting for passengers or at a train crossing. Letting your engine idle for 10 seconds uses more fuel than shutting it off and restarting it.
And, when you're lost, don't drive around in circles--ask for directions.
