Displaced Stop Lines

Displaced Stop SignAt certain intersections, you may encounter a stop line that is set back from the point where the roads cross.  This is called a displaced stop line and the intersection on Empress Street is a good example.  This is a rather confusing intersection. South of Rapelji (near the stadium), Empress Street splits into two roadways.  There's a displaced stop line in the northbound direction, and for good reason.

A common mistake made here is stopping well past the actual stop line. Stopping here completely blocks traffic trying to turn east onto Empress Street.  When approaching an intersection with a displaced stop line, you won't always see the line painted on the road, but you will see signs on both sides of the road indicating where to stop.

Another example is at Arlington and Inkster Street.  The stop line is set back from the intersection to allow transit buses the room to make a turn. Ignoring the stop line here could be causing unnecessary traffic congestion.
